EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS)

At Kinder Kids, we strictly ahdere to the principles of EYFS in the training and care of our children, so as to ensure that they mature into confident kids. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a framework that provides guidance and sets standards for the development, learning, and care of children from birth to the age of five in the United Kingdom. It forms the basis of early childhood education and is designed to ensure that children receive high-quality early years education and support.

The EYFS framework was first introduced in 2008 and has since been revised and updated to reflect current research and best practices in early childhood education. It is implemented in various settings, including nurseries, preschools, childminders, and reception classes in primary schools.

The EYFS is based on the recognition that children develop rapidly during the early years and that the experiences and environments they encounter during this period have a significant impact on their future development and learning. It emphasizes the importance of providing a secure, nurturing, and stimulating environment that supports children's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development.

The framework is organized into four overarching principles that guide early years practice:

  1. A Unique Child: Every child is a unique individual with their own strengths, interests, and learning styles. The EYFS encourages practitioners to recognize and value each child's individuality, supporting their holistic development and building on their strengths.

  2. Positive Relationships: Establishing positive and respectful relationships with children and their families is crucial for their well-being and development. The EYFS emphasizes the importance of collaboration and communication between practitioners, parents, and other caregivers to ensure consistent support for children's learning and well-being.

  3. Enabling Environments: The physical and social environments in which children learn and play have a significant impact on their development. The EYFS encourages practitioners to create rich, stimulating, and inclusive environments that promote exploration, independence, and active learning.

  4. Learning and Development: The EYFS recognizes that children learn and develop in different ways and at their own pace. It identifies seven areas of learning and development, which are further divided into specific aspects:

    • Communication and Language: This area focuses on developing children's listening, speaking, and understanding skills.

    • Physical Development: It promotes the development of fine and gross motor skills, coordination, and spatial awareness.

    • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development: This area supports children in developing self-confidence, self-awareness, managing their feelings, and building positive relationships.

    • Literacy: It encompasses reading and writing skills, as well as fostering a love for books and language.

    • Mathematics: This area introduces children to numbers, shapes, patterns, and problem-solving.

    • Understanding the World: It encourages children to explore their environment, develop an understanding of people and communities, and learn about the natural world and technology.

    • Expressive Arts and Design: This area promotes creativity, imagination, and self-expression through art, music, dance, and role-play.

Practitioners use the EYFS framework to observe, assess, and plan for each child's individual needs and interests. They provide a play-based curriculum that balances child-initiated activities with adult-guided learning experiences. Regular assessments and progress checks help identify any areas of concern and inform interventions or additional support if necessary.

By providing a comprehensive framework for early childhood education, the Early Years Foundation Stage aims to lay a strong foundation for children's future learning and well-being. It recognizes the importance of holistic development, nurturing positive relationships, and creating enabling environments to support children's growth during these crucial early years.

Learning

We are an established and outstanding setting, delivering high quality care and education to children. Our setting is an adventurous woodland Oasis for children to explore. Our highly qualified Professionals support, encourage and facilitate learning opportunities enabling our children to be confident and independent lifelong learners.

Our curriculum is extensively based on the EYFS scheme.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is how the Government and early years professionals describe the time in your child’s life between birth and the age of 5. This is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for school, as well as preparing them for their future learning and successes. From when your child is born up until the age of 5, their early years’ experience should be happy, active, exciting, fun, and secure and support their development, care and learning needs.

The EYFS Framework exists to support all professionals working in early years to help your child and was developed with several early year’s experts. In 2021, the framework was revised to make it clearer and easier to use, with more focus on the things that matter most. This new framework also has a greater emphasis on your role in helping your child develop.

The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development. Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge, and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development. Children should mostly develop the three prime areas first. These are:

  • Communication and language

  • Physical development

  • Personal, social, and emotional development

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in four specific areas. These are:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the world

  • Expressive arts and design

These seven areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs. This is a little bit like a curriculum in primary and secondary schools, but it is suitable for very young children, and is designed to be flexible so that staff can follow your child’s unique needs and interests. Through the EYFS, children learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking, which takes place both indoors and outside.
